In a strategic move that reflects its deep commitment to environmental sustainability and technological innovation, AIDA Cruises has announced the development of a new generation of cruise ships equipped with multi-fuel propulsion systems. This bold initiative opens new horizons in the cruise industry and strengthens the company’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
The announcement was made by the company’s CEO, Felix Eichhorn, in a recent interview with the German newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt, where he revealed details about one of the most ambitious projects in AIDA’s history.
The new ships, ordered in April 2025, will be built at the Fincantieri shipyards in Italy and are scheduled for delivery in 2030 and 2032. Each vessel will have a gross tonnage of approximately 150,000, making them among the largest in the AIDA fleet.
The most notable feature of these ships is their multi-fuel engines, which means they will initially operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) but will also be ready to run on alternative fuels in the future, such as:
Eichhorn noted that this approach is a response to the current lack of clarity in governmental and international regulations regarding future marine fuels. He stated:
“It is currently impossible to predict which fuel will ultimately prevail in which region and whether it will be available in sufficient quantities and at affordable prices.”
Therefore, the design of these new ships incorporates flexibility to adapt to various future scenarios, giving AIDA a significant operational advantage and the ability to respond to evolving market conditions.
