Opening of Proton Car Production Plant in Egypt with a Capacity of 40,000 Cars Annually

The Ezz El-Arab El-Suwaidi Automotive Group inaugurated its new plant for the production of Proton cars in Egypt today, Tuesday, in the presence of Engineer Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, and Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, along with a number of senior officials from Egypt and Malaysia. This inauguration is part of joint efforts to enhance industrial cooperation between the two countries and localize the automotive industry in Egypt.

The plant is located in the industrial zone of 6th of October City and aims to produce 40,000 cars annually in its first phase, with future plans to increase production to 80,000 cars annually. This project represents an important step within the framework of the national strategy to localize industry, as it contributes to enhancing Egypt's manufacturing capabilities and increasing the local content in car manufacturing.

Statements by Engineer Kamel El-Wazir

In his speech at the opening ceremony, Engineer Kamel El-Wazir expressed his happiness to participate in this important event, which reflects the fruitful cooperation between Egypt and Malaysia in the field of strategic industries. The minister explained that the opening of the Ezz El-Arab El-Suwaidi plant for the production of Proton cars coincides with the official visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to Egypt and his meeting with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

The minister pointed out that this project represents an important step towards achieving the national strategy to localize the automotive industry, as it contributes to establishing high-level feeder industries and enhances Egypt's ability to shift from assembling cars to full production. He added that the plant aims to produce 40,000 cars annually in the first phase, with the possibility of increasing production to 80,000 cars in later stages, which will enhance Egypt's manufacturing capabilities and increase export opportunities.

The minister confirmed that the project aligns with the Egyptian government's vision to boost exports and increase the local content in various industries, noting that the local content in Proton cars to be produced at the plant will reach 48%. He also pointed out that the plant will provide about 300 job opportunities, contributing to supporting the local economy.

The minister invited Malaysian companies to invest in Egypt and take advantage of the Egyptian market as a platform for exporting to other markets, such as the European Union, COMESA, and Arab countries, thanks to the free trade agreements that Egypt has with these markets. He emphasized that the Egyptian government is keen to support the transition towards a green economy and improve the quality of local products in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

For his part, Engineer Hisham Ezz El-Arab, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ezz El-Arab El-Suwaidi Industrial Investment Group, expressed his happiness at the opening of the new plant, noting that this project is part of the company's ambitious vision to transform Egypt into a regional hub for the automotive industry. He explained that the plant is located on an area of 70,000 square meters in 6th of October City, with total investments amounting to 50 million dollars.

Ezz El-Arab added that the plant is divided into three phases, with the first phase including the production of cars with a capacity of 40,000 cars annually, while the second phase involves the establishment of a paint factory, and the third phase aims to increase production capacity to 80,000 cars annually. He confirmed that the plant will start actual production in December 2024, focusing on the production of the Proton Saga, one of the most popular cars in Malaysia.

Ezz El-Arab also noted that the company plans to produce three new models by the end of 2027, including an electric vehicle, as part of the company's commitment to supporting the transition towards electric vehicles in Egypt. He confirmed that the plant aims to export Proton cars to six African countries, which will enhance Egypt's export opportunities and increase its competitiveness in global markets.

Ezz El-Arab emphasized the importance of focusing on the customer as a key element in the success of the project, confirming that the Proton Saga meets customer needs in terms of quality, safety, and price, as the car will be offered at a price that suits the largest possible customer base in Egypt and the targeted export markets.
